 BINNARY OPPOSITE THEORY

Levi Strauss is a French anthropologist, who believes that the majority in narrative in media forms such as books and films contain opposing main character. Such as:

Young vs old

Good vs evil

Weak vs strong

Rich vs poor

This theory is called the Binary opposite theory. This theory is often used to thicken the plot in stories or to communicate the meaning in stories. Like in each example of the opposites, one side will be considered as good and has good morals while the opposite side would be consider as unmoral and evil.  And if which side wins  might relate to what the director is trying to say in the movie

A Little Background

One Piece is a story that depicts the adventure of Monkey D Luffy, a young man who is made of rubber, who, inspired by his childhood idol, Red-Haired Shanks, sets up on a journey from the East blue sea to across the world to discover it's greatest treasure, the One Piece, and inherit the former pirate king Gol D Roger's will- by becoming the King of the Pirates and set the world free from the grasp of the authoritarian rule of the world government.

Some Opposites:

Freedom vs Authority: One of the main plot of One piece is centered around this idea. One of the biggest reason why One Piece is about a pirates is because of freedom, in the world of one piece where the world is covered with water. The reason why Pirates exist in this world is because pirates are usually people who would enjoy freedom, willing to do whatever it takes to be free like for example , Monkey D Luffy wanted to become the pirate king, because the pirate king has the most freedom in the world. Whilst people like the Marines who served under the dictatorship rule of the world government tries to combat the idea of freedom and democracy by any mean necessary.

People who are already strong vs Hard work:  Talent vs Hard work is often depicted in the show like for example Luffy vs the Antagonist Kaido. Luffy unlike any character in the series needs to work hard to over come the obsticle in the world. Whilst Kaido was gifted with pure strength and endurance. So the difference between those two is that Luffy will work hard to reach his goals whilst Kaido wont grow. The Author did this is to show that people who will work hard will soon surpass people who are already strong.
