5 stages of moral panic

1. concern:

an event sparks social anxiety to the masses

2. Hostility

subculture is seen as FOLK devils, targeted by media due to the concern the media has and starts targeting a few groups of people who are part of the subculture

3. Consensus

Takes over the narrative and is when everyone agrees that this thing will cause harm to society

4. Disproportionality

Threat is exaggerated

5. Volatility

A change is made in society, where government/ mass media company came in and try to stops it and due to it everyone just forgets about it and move on to other media

Case study:

Tiktok

Concern:

the Madras High Court, while hearing a PIL, asked the Government of India to ban the app, citing that it "encourages pornography" and shows "inappropriate content". and said that minors using the app were at risk of being targeted by sexual predators.

Hostility:

The Indian masses started to blame the Tiktokers/ people who use the apps as hearing that they promote pornography and sexual content

Consensus:

Parents in India started to make their children to not use Tik Tok as the app was not save to use for children and started to encourage the government to ban Tik Tok

Disproportionate:

People started to say that tik tok is ruining this generation and  is capable of decreasing the attention span of Teenagers of using the website. The website was also capable to steal the users data

Volatility:

TikTok, then was banned completely in India by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on 29 June 2020.
